Great tips, Mandell. I must admit that in the October rush of letter requests, I seldom think that the process might be as stressful to students as it is to teachers.

As a teacher who has written a good number of rec letters over the years, one of the more helpful things that I have found is a list of the student's best memories of the class. If generally find this to be even more useful than a resume. Occasionally, it has been a year or two since I have taught a particular student and having a reminder of what they feel they did well helps me to add more personal connections to the letter.
